Belly button reshaping or umbilicoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that changes the size, shape or position of the bellybutton. The procedure is also known as bellybutton rejuvenation.
Fast Facts
- This procedure is popular among both men and women who are unhappy about the appearance, size or position of their bellybuttons.
- Mainly your genes determine the shape and look of a bellybutton at birth, but also by the way the doctor cut your umbilical cord at birth.
- Bellybutton re-shaping on it’s own can be performed under a local anesthetic to numb the abdominal area. Some surgeons also give sedatives to make you relax.
- Expect a light dressing to be applied immediately after the operation. Dissolvable stitches are commonly used; minimising return visits for stitch removal.
This procedure is popular among both men and women who are unhappy about the appearance, size or position of their belly buttons. It has been trending considerably recently and gaining even more in popularity as people hear about it. If the appearance of your belly button bothers you, wearing swimming trunks, swimsuits, short tops and low cut jeans might make you self-conscious. You might feel uncomfortable being intimate, having piercings or, if your belly button protrudes, even wearing tight clothes.
The belly button or umbilicus is the scar from the umbilical cord that connected each of us to our mothers while we were in the womb. Its shape is determined by how the skin is attached to the underlying muscle. Usually the scar is left inside a hole once the umbilical cord is cut away, making the belly button an “innie”. If, however, the belly button sticks out, as it does in some people, it is often referred to as an “outie”.
What is belly button reshaping surgery?
Mainly, your genes determine the shape and look of your belly button at birth, but also by the way the doctor cut your umbilical cord. Other than surgery, there is little that can be done to fix an unsightly belly button.
The height of the belly button is also a matter determined by nature. Some people feel their belly buttons are either too high or too low, making the body and torso look disproportionate. Belly button surgery can move it to any position you desire.
Belly button surgery can be performed on its own or as part of a tummy tuck procedure. It can also be combined with liposuction to improve body contours. Surgery on the belly button alone is usually performed on those who have lost a lot of weight or are unhappy about their belly buttons. When performed as part of a tummy tuck procedure, the size, shape and location can be changed while the overall stomach wall is being strengthened.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), over 2,100 umbilicoplasties without a tummy tuck were performed in 2005 in the US.
Reasons for choosing to have your belly button reshaped
People opt for belly button reshaping surgery for a number of reasons.
You are a good candidate if any of the following apply:
- You are unhappy about your belly button and wish to change its position, size, shape or contours. This could require shifting it’s position to a location that you consider more attractive, removing an “outie”, reducing the depth or size of an “innie” or re-contouring a misshapen belly button.
- You have gained and subsequently lost a lot of weight, resulting in a misshapen belly button. Weight gain stretches the skin around the belly button, and losing that weight may leave the skin stretched into a long horizontal skin fold.
- You have developed wrinkles and scars from previous abdominal surgery or from piercings. This procedure can help remove the unsightly marks and excess skin folds.
- You feel your belly button needs reshaping after childbirth.
- If you have developed an umbilical bulge resulting from hernia, your belly button may appear misshapen and unattractive. Sometimes umbilical hernias occur later in life or in women during pregnancy or after childbirth due to added stress in the area. These can be corrected with a hidden-incision umbilical hernia repair.
- Some people who have no visible belly button at all opt to create the look of one to appear more normal.
As you can see, the belly button reshaping procedure can be tailored to the specific needs of each patient. After an initial consultation, your surgeon will customise the procedure to provide the outcome you want.
What to expect
This surgery will probably be performed an outpatient basis; you can go home after the effects of anaesthesia have worn off. Belly button re-shaping on it’s own can be performed under a local anesthetic to numb the abdominal area. Some surgeons also give sedatives to help you relax.
How long the procedure will take depends on the change requested. Usually it takes less than an hour, unless a hernia has to be repaired as part of the procedure.
A number of different techniques are used to reshape the belly button. Which technique is used on you will depend on your surgeon’s preferences as well as the type of change you require.
If you’ve asked for an “outie” to be made into an “innie”—which apparently most people tend to prefer—your surgeon may use internal sutures on the underside of the belly button to shape the desired contours. If you asked for an overall reduction in size, your belly button will likely be removed, reshaped and sewn back on to get the desired size and proportion. If there is scar tissue to be removed, the skin will be re-sutured after removal for a better look. If you wish to reposition the belly button, the usual procedure is to remove a strip of skin from the abdomen, allowing the belly button to be pulled in the desired direction. In almost all cases your surgeon will cut the skin inside your belly button to minimise the resulting scars.
Photos will probably be taken for the purpose of “before and after” comparisons.
Before and after surgery
There are several things you can do to prepare for any surgery. No special preparation is needed for belly button reshaping. It may be helpful to have stabilised to your ideal weight before this surgery.
After surgery
Expect a light dressing to be applied immediately after the operation. Dissolvable stitches are commonly used; minimising return visits for stitch removal.
Most people can return home a few hours after the procedure. There may be some level of pain and bruising after the procedure, but the effects will be very mild. Scars are usually hidden inside the belly button.
Although complete recovery may take a week, most people whose work is not physically demanding can return to work the next day.
There are general steps that can speed up the healing process after surgery. Follow these and your surgeon’s instructions carefully to ensure speedy healing and a good outcome.
Here’s a list of things you must specifically avoid after belly button reshaping surgery:
- Avoid getting your navel pierced for a few weeks, because it can distort the outcome of the surgery. Risk of infections is also high during the healing process.
- Avoid wearing tight clothing (such as high-waisted jeans) until your surgical wounds are completely healed.
- Contact your surgeon without delay if you notice signs of infection or in case of bleeding or sudden pain.
Possible risks and complications
As with any surgical procedure there are risks involved in belly button reshaping. You should be fully aware of potential risks and complications involved in any surgical procedure before you elect to have it.
Specific complications that may occur after belly button re-shaping include:
- Pain – Pain after belly button reshaping is usually mild. Before you go home, check with your surgeon and obtain a prescription or guidance on what painkillers you can take.
- Bruising and swelling – These will be very light and subside within a few days.
- An irregular or a lopsided appearance – If your belly button appears irregular or lopsided, you may need further corrective surgery.
- Scars – Although surgeons are careful in cutting skin to ensure scars are hidden within the belly button, sometimes there is excessive scar formation, which may require a corrective procedure later.
Just as you would discuss potential benefits before surgery, it is always advisable to ask your surgeon to address the potential risks as they apply to you. They can also advise you on how to avoid or minimise some types of risk.
How much does belly button surgery cost?
The cost of belly button reshaping will vary depending on the surgeon you choose, the facilities used and the exact procedure that must be performed. Your surgeon will help you estimate potential costs after a consultation.
Expect the surgery to cost between $2000 and $4000 (AUD) including the surgeon’s and assistant surgeon’s fees, anaesthetist’s fee, hospital facilities and services and the cost of follow up visits.
You should expect the costs to be higher if you are having combined procedures at the same time.
This information is correct as of 2019.
Hi I’m skinny under 45 kg and my height is also 5ft and my body proportions are bit weird I have wide shoulder and narrow hip and long torso short legs but out of all my belly button looks too low it’s in the just little bit top of my ilium. It looks really weird and also my butt is too low. I don’t know how to fix these two. And I’m based in Sydney.
I have a large outie and I would like it to be Innie and T shaped instead. Please let me know if u could help
Hi- I have photos of this. I have bad scaring from a belly piercing and excess skin from it after having two kids. Can this be fixed?
I recently had a mini tummy tuck with an umbilical float (no muscle repair). My belly button is way too low. It looks abnormal. I look like an alien. Through my research, I am fearing that because it was an umbilical float, there may not be any recourse, and I may be stuck with this bely button that sits far too low. Is this true? Is there nothing that can be done? Am I stuck with this ridiculous looking belly button? It makes me entire body look “off” and weird. I hate it and I’m deeply upset.
Ali, I feel your pain. On the same boat, trying to figure out what the best recourse will be for this. What I’ve learned is that if you want to move it, to a higher position. There will be a vertical scar would be the lenght of the distance you decide to move the belly to. Meaning if you raised it by two inches you would have a vertical scar of two inches to the new location of the belly button. If you still have loose skin, then another tummy tuck would be an option. Meaning, again if you have enough loose skin, no vertical scar and new placement of the belly button can be achieved. Currently, looking for the right doctor to modify my existing belly button to lenghten the appearance of it. Hence getting a perceived look of a higher belly button. Like you, i’m here totally unsatisfied. let me know if you have any other insights on your end.

What age does a patient need to be to perform belly button surgery?
Hi I am Chris. I am going to have surgery to remove infected abdominal skin & the dr that is going to do it told me that he is going to seldom remove my belly button. Why does my belly button need to be removed? Can my belly button be moved to a different position during my abdominal surgery or does it have to be done later in a separate surgery and why?
Hi there! I’m interested in getting the shape of my belly button changed due to the fact tuat I feel as though it makes me look bigger in a way. My belly button sits horizontally most of the time unless I stretch it out if that makes sense. I used to be very chubby around my torso area and now that I’m fit and lost all the weight I feel as though the reason it sits horizontally is because of the excess fat that I lost and it’s stretched maybe. There’s no stretch marks I just want it to be vertical instead of horizontal because I like that look is a lot better and I feel it looks more flattering. It is the only thing I am mildly self conscious about, so just wondering how much it would be and what surgery might need to be done to achieve this look! (I’m 18 years old)
Have u got it done? I have the same situation
I would like my belly button fixed
Hi, I am 56 years old and asked for umbilicoplasty for my next birthday. I’ve always hated my belly button. It frowns, and somehow it looks too big for my petite frame. I got it pieced 20 years ago, hoping to improve the look of my belly button, but you can still see the sides of the frown on the right and left. If there is anything redeeming about my belly button, there’s a nice swirl on the inside that I want to keep and make more visible. I would like to bear my midriff more-who says a 56 year old can’t do that- and feel comfortable in a bikini. I’ve been working out in one way or another since I was in high school, and actually I have sculpted abs, but I feel my unsightly belly button ruins everything I’ve worked for. I would like it to be lifted to look more vertical than horizontal, and show off that nice swirl. Also, mine is an innie, which would be another plus if my belly button didn’t look so unhappy.
Wow, you and I have the same story! I had a frowning belly button my whole life. Mine developed that way due to weight loss. It was once an outie when I was a baby but the little outie eventually became a flat button with a cleft in it. It’s actually pretty cute. But you couldn’t see it because of the frowning skin. Like you wanted that cute swirl on the inside visible, I wanted the little knot with the cleft in it to show. So in 2017 I got umbilicoplasty and my surgeon removed an inch of hooding above it so you can see inside of it easier. Now the button with the cleft is very visible and it’s much cuter! That said, I still have scarring on both sides. I hate that part of it. You should get it done too still.
wow i am so sorry that you had to go through all of that i feel so bad
Hello, I have a big navel since I was young, I really hate it. It looks so funny even some one can see it when you are in clothes . How can you help me

My daughter was born with gastroschisis which is a birth defect you are born with your intestines out and when you are born the doctor has to put the intestines back in and “make a belly button” or stich your skin back together. My daughter is now 14 and she hates showing her belly button and is very insecure so I wanted to know if she could get a “normal belly button” as she says even thoe she is 14?
Hi, my name is Jade and i was born with gastrochesis aswell. But instead of the doctor giving me a belly button, they just stitched my skin together and i have a massive disgusting scar on my stomach and no sign of belly button. Ive recently been looking to see if anyone will be able to help me. Im nearly 18 now and sadly have had no luck so i hope that your daughter gets whatever will make her happy
Thank you for this web page 🙂
Hi, I had bowel surgery and they cut me belly button in half to do the op! 🙂 Now I have a massive outie. I live on the gold coast. Do you know where I could go around here to get my outie made into an innie?? I don’t mind going to Brisbane if I need to. Many thanks to all who have posted on this page telling your story. I feel you.. It;s good to know I’m not alone 🙂
Is 13 too young to reshape an outie into an innie?
Hi,
I had a panniculectomy about 2 years ago which created a new belly button. THe surgery itself was not the best but I am doing well. The part that I don’t like is the placement of the belly button. Not only is it off center (it is too far to the left) and it is too high up. I thought I was okay with it but if I wear any type of shirt light in color you can see it because it is so dark. Is this something that would be worth going through the pain and money for? Also, would you recommend going back to the surgeon that created the monster? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
ok here it is, I pierced my belly button not knowing i was about a month or so pregnant so i took it off. Well while i was GROWING my piercing grew too even tho i didnt have my belly ring in. I believe i probably even tore the muscle around it too. So now I have a scar and a dent in that area i had pierced my belly(right above it my belly button) Will that be too much to repai? and what will be the COSTS for the repair 🙁 i am extremely insecure about it.
hi i am a 16 year old and i want to change my outie to an innie. My outie is a weird looking one and i cant explain it so here is a picture that resembles what it looks like, http://www.seattleite.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/MightyOStrawberryJelly.jpg

hi, i am a 16 year old boy and i i have an interesting outie. its weird to explain so here is a picture that sort of replicates my belly button : http://www.seattleite.com/wpcontent/uploads/2012/12/MightyOStrawberryJelly.jpg
yes it’s a donut… but its what my belly button looks like in terms of shape but smaller (no white powder). anyways is it possible to undergo surgery to have a normal innie? and would this cost more than your usual price? ($2000-$4000?). please reply back. Thank you very much
Hi im 25 years old and have an outtie belly button and really want to change the appearence of this into a innie. However, I have a phobia of needles and hospitals and want to know will i be put to sleep before the surgary? And also can you recommend any hospitals for this type of surgary in London. Or how do i go about it do i speak to my doctor to recommend me? Thank you
My baby is 1 year old and was born with a hernia it is closing on its own, however there is excess skin that was once her navel. Can anything be done to correct this at her age?
Im a mother of 4, my second child is a little girl she’s 7 now but when she was born she was born with gastroschisis and her belly button appears stretched out. She’s been bothered by it the last couple of years and recently asked me if there was anything we could do to fix it. I know she is probably too young for surgery that isn’t absoultely necessary but do you think this surgery would work for her and at what age do you recommend?
Hi. I am a 17 year old girl and I have what I believe to be an outtie belly button. It doesn’t go past my stomache so you can’t see it with tight clothes, but I’m self conscious about when I wear crop tops and bikinis. My main concern is there’s skin folds completely around the belly button. Is there any way for me to get these folds to flatten out without surgery? It sort of looks like this, except the inside part is a little deeper into the belly button hole: http://www.eppleyplasticsurgery.com/can-an-umbilicoplasty-give-me-an-innie-bellybutton/
Hello I’m 14 year old male and I have a outie it’s not massive but it looks really weird and smiles. It sticks out about halfway and makes me very self conscious and when I stretch or lay flat it pokes out mor than it does when I’m standing and it’s because of this I tend to stay away from girls and I do not like to swim. It is really annoying though because I feel I have a nice body but cannot show it my mum understands but I think the costs are too high as we are tight on budget and I do not want to harm her financially is there anyway I can make it go in and look natural without surgery?
Hi Thomas,
Thanks for your question. Unfortunately we’re not aware of any non-surgical ways to change an outie belly button. However, since you are young, it’s possible that your belly button appearance will continue to change as you grow older, and that you’ll be happier with the way it looks in a few years.
Thomas yr now 20 did u did yr surgery? Can u tell me the complications too nd cost.
Hi there, my wife was born with omphalcele and currently has no belly button due to complications as a child. Is it possible for a surgeon to create one with plastic surgury? Thanks
Hi Steve,
Thanks for your question! Yes, in many cases it is possible to create a belly button through surgery. We encourage your wife to consult with a local plastic surgeon who offers belly button reshaping to find out more about the possibilities.
Hi, I have a very large outtie belly button and it’s kind of embarrassing when I wear any tight shirt .
How much do you think it’s gonna cost to have an innie.
I’m 25 yrs and do have much weight
Hi, I’m in my 30’s and I’ve had four children. After my fourth child my belly button didn’t go back in properly and I ended up with a minor hernier in which I had surgery to put it back in there as a medical procedure not cosmetic. Because I have wide stretch marks all over my tummy area my belly button looks like a sad face. There is so much loose skin above my belly button that it hangs a little over my belly button to create a sad face. If I pull the skin up from my belly button a little it reveals my normal belly button again. My question is, can the skin above my belly button be removed to reveal my button and if so how much is it to have a consultation to talk to someone about? I’m only 50kgs and am a size 8 aus. I’m not a big girl I just have loose belly skin around my belly button, not pretty at all. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Hi Melissa,
Thanks for your question. Yes, the removal of loose skin on your abdomen is something that can be accomplished during surgery. We advise you to schedule a consultation visit with a surgeon who can discuss your options to change how your belly button and the surrounding tummy area looks. Consultation visits are generally free; you can expect the surgery itself to cost between $2000 and $4000 (AUD).
Hi, i’ve notice recently that when i stretch the skin out on my innie belly button, it opens up even more deeper? i’ve never had kids or anything, it’s almost as if it’s been torn or something? it’s like a deep cave.
Hi Georgia,
Thanks for your question! If you’re concerned about the appearance of your belly button, you may wish to consider belly button reshaping. We advise you to meet with a local practitioner who can examine your belly button and advise you of your options.
I want to change my big outtie into a normal sized outtie what is the proper way to do it
Hi. I’m only fourteen but my belly button has bothered me forever. When I was a baby I had a huge hernia but it went away so I never had surgery on it but now I’m left with an outie/innie. The bottom and top are innie but in the upper middle of it is this fat wrinkly piece of skin. My sister’s told me it looks like an eyeball (cute, huh?). I like to wear some tight clothing and bikinis so it is really embarrassing to have this thing popping out. So you think it will change at all as I get older or is surgery really the only option?
Hi Kara,
Thanks for your question. It is quite possible that the appearance of your belly button could continue to change over time. If you reach the age of 18 and its appearance is still bothering you, we’d advise you to schedule a consultation with a surgeon so you can learn more about your belly button reshaping options.
I have a “sad” belly button. It is long sideways and looks closed with a slight turn down on bothside looking similar to this ( but turn your head to the left side to see it properly. (Hope that make sense)
I very self concious about it and would like it fixed. How do i go about it.? I lice in brisbane QLD
Hi Stacey,
Have a look here to see which doctors perform this procedure near you and shoot them a message or give them a ring to find out when you could have a consultation.
My belly button is quite long and just wanted to get stitched smaller, how much would it cost? And am I able to get pregnant after having done the surgery?
Hi Jessica,
You most certainly can get pregnant after having belly button surgery!
The cost depends on the doctor, but expect to pay between 2000 and 4000 AUD.
I’m seventeen and I had an umbilical hernia at birth. Ever since I was little I’ve had a really strange outie – it’s these circular bulges of skin protruding from my stomach and it looks a bit like a seashell. It’s gotten flatter with time a little but it’s still very, very distinctive and odd. It’s not like a normal ‘outie’, which is just a little bump – it’s a large strange lump and I’ve always hated it. I need to know if this can be corrected and if I’d be able to afford it.
Yes you can definitely have your belly button corrected. Generally you are looking around $2000 – $4000. It is possible the procedure may be able to be performed in a surgeons procedure room without having to go to a hospital or day surgery (which means you won’t have to pay for those additional services).
You may need to wait until you are 18 before a surgeon will operate, or at least attend the consult with a parent/guardian so they can give permission.
Hi I’m 2 weeks post op subtotal colectomy, after surgery I’ve noticed my “innie” belly button has been sown up with the result looking very ugly and skin creasing. Is it possible to correct this or do I need to wait until all swelling has gone
Hello, my name is Lydia and I would like to inquire about getting my belly button area “surgically” attended to. I gave birth to my son 6 months ago, everything in my body is the same except my belly button. I use to love wearing my belly bar, but cannot because of the stretched area I am left with. Is it a pretty easy procedure? What are the costs most likely to have something like this done in Australia? Thanks so much for your time, I really appreciate it.
Hi Lydia,
Thanks for getting in touch. With any surgery, it’s always important that you see a qualified surgeon who has experience with the procedure. This particular procedure is less complex than others, but still requires skill to perform and like any surgery, comes with it’s own set of risks.
Costs vary from Doctor to Doctor. However, you’re looking on average at around $2000 – $4000 AUD. To find a doctor near you, have a look at our practitioner finder.

MyFriend. is 17 years old lives in a Mormon family her belly button is really round and protrudes a bit I agree with her that I would have it re-shaped her mom is against it but with persuasion she might go for it we live in Oregon what are our options pricewise and is it a pretty simple procedure will try to raise the money for her does insurance ever cover the cost if it’s a psychological problem from birth
hey, I’d like to know the price for a belly button surgery. when i was 3-4 i had an innie then i did something to it (can’t remember) and it became an outie. my mum got scared so she took me to the hospital and i had an operation. now it kinda looks like a volcano with a rock on the top. i don’t know if you understand me. I am 16 years old and i really want to get a surgery. so i was just wondering what the price would be. i know that’s it’s not cheap but just wonderion
Hi, i live in NYC and im 15 years old would like to remove my outie belly button and make it an innie. I hate having an outie i feel very self conscious in school, since i take swimming. I guess since it wasn’t a serious problem like a hernia or something my parents decided to let me live with it when i was younger. Although it had gotten smaller since i was 4 i still think that it is ugly. I would like to know how much it would cost to get it removed. Also if im too young to get cosmetic surgery. Thank You.
Hi Phylicia,
Thanks for your question! First up – props to you living in NYC – it’s one of our favourite places to visit! In Australia, most surgeons would consider you too young to have this procedure. The legal age here is 18 after which it would be allowable. Some procedures are allowed with full parental consent and a consultation with both patient and parent.
It’s quite normal for teenagers to be self conscious of their bodies – plenty of people have “outies” and it’s honestly no biggie! However, if you reach legal age and it still really bothers you, by all means, have a consultation with a qualified surgeon.
Hope that helps!
Hi there I want to change my “outie” to an “innie”. What do you estimate the cost to be?
I use to have a beautiful belly button before I had my beautiful baby. She was very big for my petite body and stretched out my belly button leaving my piercing hole too big and stretch marks around it. How much would the procedure costs and what would the recovery be like?
Hello Jasmine, thanks for your email. The belly button can certainly be addressed very effectively with surgery, this can most likely be performed in a Doctors room with local anaesthetic and general costs are around $1500. The stretch marks are different and quite hard to budge. The only effective way to remove them is surgery, you would need a surgical consult to ascertain course of action with this. Hope this is helpful.
My wife want make belly hole
Hey there, this is in regard of your belly button surgery article. I’m just a little curious more than anything else. I have very little body fat on my tummy so there may not be too much to work with here. Here is my belly button:
https://imageshack.com/scaled/large/708/9mre.jpg
Now most would say that my belly button is very normal or prefered. However, after spending so much time working my abs it would be silly not to want to be completely satisfied with my midriff. Truth is I don’t like my belly button very much because you can’t really see it. One of my friends actually brought this to light recently. She said, “Charla, your belly button is hiding.” And I don’t really like that about it. It seems that hooding covers it entirely. Even when I stretch the hood still covers the interior. I have not had kids or anything and my navel has always looked like this.
This may sound weird or vain but I got to looking at the inside of it last night with a mirror and a flashlight and thought the inside of my belly button was actually quite pretty. The folds form a symmetrical snowflake, which my boyfriend pointed out. It would be nice if that could be more obvious.
So is there a way to remove the hooding entirely? And it’s also really deep for my body type. I would like it to become more shallow as well. But most importantly I just want the inside of my belly button to become visible. I think it’s attractive in there and so do those that have poked at it, lol. What do you think?
Hello, I wanted to know undergoing this surgery will cause problems for me if I give birth later in life, because I heard that skin can’t be stretched anymore after this kind of surgeries.
I am unhappy about my belly button because it is too big and too deep – I can put almost my entire pinky finger inside! And it’s not a matter of weight, because in my life I have been both chubby and skinny and the bellybutton remained pretty much the same. Can this be corrected?
Hello Jane,
Thank you for your enquiry. You can certainly have your belly button reshaped. Once the procedure has been done there is no problems having more children, it will be just as strong as your previous belly button. The doctor will of course need to assess you medically prior to the surgery to confirm this. Hope this is helpful for you.

Barbara,
Women of all ages undergo surgical procedures. It is difficult to determine your suitability for surgery until formal review at consultation.
You a good candidate for belly button re shaping if you wish to change the position, size or shape of your belly button. In some cases, belly button reshaping can help remove excess skin folds. This procedure can often be done under local anaesthetic.
A tummy tuck is ideal if you have lots of sagging or excess skin, a protruding tummy or separated tummy muscles.
Either procedure will have you feeling more confident in your swimmers on holidays.
