Thinking about microdermabrasion? We are at Costhetics.

This non-surgical anti-ageing treatment has been popping up on our radar more and more as we track the latest news and information about aesthetic enhancement in Australia and beyond.

If you’ve done any research yourself on this topic, you may already have learned most patients require between four and six treatments to achieve their ultimate goal of improving the tone and texture of their skin. This begs the question: Will my skin look different after my first microdermabrasion treatment?

Let’s find out…

Why Is Dermabrasion Right for Me and My Skin?

Few cosmetic treatments are as ‘universal’ as microdermabrasion. “Men and women of all ages can benefit from dermabrasion,” reports John Hopkins University. Additionally, microdermabrasion is gentle on the skin and gentle on the nerves of people who may be pain-phobic. (It is generally considered ouchless.)

Once you and your skin specialist have determined whether microdermabrasion is right for you, you’ll develop a plan to restore radiance and youthfulness to your skin. Your first session will be your first step in correcting

Microdermabrasion requires neither a topical numbing agent nor anaesthesia. During your appointment, your practitioner will use a special diamond-tipped wand to exfoliate dead skin cells. (Doesn’t that sound luxe? You’ll learn more about it in a moment). The depth of the abrasion is controlled by the amount of pressure and time the practitioner chooses.

What Happens after I Have One Treatment of Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a top aesthetic treatment in Australia for good reason. Chief among them is that the treatment is virtually painless and requires no recovery period.  This is a definite plus for people (like Team Costhetics) trying to cram 26 hours into every 24-hour day.

As noted above, it takes on average 4-6 sessions to achieve maximum skin rejuvenation. That being said, a majority of people report that before and after just one treatment of microdermabrasion, they enjoy:

  • Brighter skin (because dead surface skin has been exfoliated)
  • Skin that’s smoother to the touch
  • Fine lines that appear less prominent
  • Less noticeable scars
  • Better pore size

It’s not all sunshine, lollipops and roses. Your skin may have an unnatural reddish or pink glow initially, though it will return to normal in about 24 hours. Your skin may also feel different and slightly tight as though you’d been in the sun all day. This sensation also dissipates quickly.

Diamonds are Your Skin’s Best Friend with Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion has made huge strides forward since the dark ages of the 20th Century. Perhaps the most significant improvement has been the development of the disposable diamond tip wand. Considered easier to control and thus more precise, it allows practitioners to:

  • Customise treatments for each skin type with wand tips of various sizes and textures.
  • Adjust the degree of resurfacing based on the patient’s needs.

What You Don’t Want to See After 1 Session of Microdermabrasion

We mentioned above that microdermabrasion is one of the most universal of cosmetic treatments. That doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone, of course. Even the gentlest microdermabrasion can worsen:

  • Acne breakouts
  • Broken capillaries
  • Hyper-sensitive skin
  • Inflamed acne
  • Rosacea

A trained skin expert will assess your skin prior to your session to help you determine if microdermabrasion is your friend or foe.

Before (and After) Your First Microdermabrasion Treatment

Microdermabrasion is double ace with patients even before they’ve had their session because this treatment is very easy to prepare for. In fact, the same common-sense instructions apply before and after each session:

  • Avoid chemical peels for seven days before and after your treatment
  • Enjoy days in and nights out to avoid direct sunlight
  • Slather on the SPF if you must brave the elements
  • Show your skin some love with skincare products rich in essential nourishing ingredients (A, C, E)

What do you think? Could your skin (and your self-image) use a little boost? When you’re ready to try this popular skin treatment, make sure you pick a great skin expert with lots of training, experience, and a host of devoted clients. That’s the Costhetics Way.
