Each year around this time, Costhetics gets out our crystal ball to predict the future of aesthetic everything. (We use heaps of carefully compiled research notes, too, of course.) What we see on the horizon is pretty thrilling.

We think the 20’s are going to be remembered as the decade fat met its match. Here’s why…

New for 2020: Injectables for Cellulite and Body Toning

The quest for healthy beauty in 2020 will inevitably include the desire to reduce body fat and contour more pleasing curves. Two game-changers that are on track to shake things up with their new approach and long-lasting results are:

  • Cellulite Injectable Treatments – Two separate studies confirm collagenase clostridium histolyticum (CCH) has just been confirmed as delivering positive results in the treatment of cellulite in the buttocks.
  • Muscle-Directed Treatments – high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy is used to trigger supramaximal contractions that just can’t be achieved by voluntary muscle action (as in exercise). It’s used for the strengthening of muscles of the abdomen and buttocks to help them appear firm and toned.

“It’s worth noting, that (these technologies) are intended to act as supplements to an active, healthy lifestyles — not substitutes for mindful eating or regular exercise,” says Allure Magazine.

Improvements in Traditional Temperature-Based Fat Treatments

These traditional fat-targeting treatments that use heat and cold to blast fat aren’t new, but the science behind them continues to make them even better. They will remain popular in 2020 because they work:

  • Cryolipolysis – Cold destroys fat cells, which the body then naturally breaks down and removes via the liver. The treatment can be used to re-contour areas of the body individually or in combination with other skin rejuvenating treatments.
  • Thermal Lipolysis – Like its cold-hearted twin cryolipolysis, this treatment destroys fat cells, which the body then eliminates naturally. It’s an effective way to target adipose (fat) tissue in troublesome areas. It is particularly useful for targeting the mid-section where fat is especially resistant to diet and exercise.

An emerging trend in fat reduction provides a safer, gentler way to generate fat-destroying heat. Radio frequency treatments heat fat tissue without touching the skin. The process causes fat cells to shrink after which they are eliminated by the body. What makes it uniquely appealing is its ability to be used on patients regardless of their BMI.

Women’s Sexual Revolution Meets Sexual Rejuvenation

No longer discussed in whispers behind closed doors, female sexuality and vaginal rejuvenation are in the news. Candace Bushnell, author of Sex and the City, told the media she shelled out thousands of dollars for a vaginal laser-rejuvenation treatment that has become a cultish obsession among the city’s most privileged. Women seeking healthy beauty for their genitals can choose from:

  • Vaginoplasty (surgical) or Mona Lisa Touch (non-surgical) – tightens the vagina and can improve sensitivity and menopausal symptoms.
  • Labiaplasty – changes the size and shape of the inner and outer lips of the vagina to make them smaller and/or more symmetrical.
  • Vulvoplasty – removes skin folds in the vulva for cosmetic improvement to reduce the risk of UTIs, chronic vaginitis, and dermatitis.

Trend followers say there has been an increase in innovative and non-invasive treatments as opposed to traditional surgical techniques. A popular radio frequency device called the Mona Lisa Touch is helping patients tighten external and internal tissues to promote collagen production in the vaginal area. The treatment is quick, virtually pain-free, and requires no post-treatment downtime. Winner!

We Know What Boys Want: Cosmetic Surgery

Statistics show men account for only 13% of cosmetic surgery procedures and 8% of minimally invasive treatments, but that number is expected to explode in 2020 as men demand more:

  • Ear surgery
  • Chin augmentation
  • Neck lift
  • Nose job

“Just as women can turn to a suite of procedures, known as the ‘Mummy Makeover,’ more men are embracing their own set of treatments, the ‘Daddy-Do-Over,’” according to a statement by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Beauty Customisation Will Have Its Day…Year…Decade

The explosion of bespoke beauty products, fine-tuned cosmetic treatments, and holistic medical procedures all reflect the same ethos. Today’s consumer demands a just-for-me experience in everything from their Netflix viewing to a specially designed combination of facial surgery and rejuvenation treatments. This is particularly true of millennials. Costhetics predicts that Baby Boomers (the original Me Generation) plus their millennial offspring will use their dollars to shape the aesthetics world in their own special image of unique, one-of-a-kind beauty.

There’s something else we’ll be seeing more of in 2020. Peter Marian, Senior Editor Retail Intelligence for global trend authority WGSN, foresees a surge in customisation. Thanks to innovation and advancements across many fields, the beauty industry can promise consumers will no longer be relegated to one-for-all and all-for-one products when it comes to fat reduction and other aesthetic concerns.

That all sounds great to us!
