Earlier this month, Adam Downer, Costhetics’ Managing Director (and our Grand Wizard of the Internet) was privileged to be part of the 2015 Non-Surgical Symposium at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Melbourne. The Non-Surgical Symposium is an unparalleled resource for insightful information provided by experts and innovators in cosmetic enhancement.
The annual event is co-sponsored by the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australasia (CPSA). It’s considered the premier educational event for non-surgical aestheticians in Australasia.
This year, organisers invited attendees to Master the basics to achieve excellence.
When he wasn’t addressing colleagues, Adam and members of the Costhetics team were hard at work stocking their knowledge boxes, attending seminars and networking with attendees. Providing some of the most illuminating talks were
- Dr Patrick Trevidic
- Dr Mark Magnusson
The information they shared with us was too interesting and illuminating not to share with you, and that’s exactly what we’re doing in our two-part post.
Keynote Speaker Offers Keys to Facial Rejuvenation
Respected plastic surgeon Dr Patrick Trevidic is based in France, where he is Chairman of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at Sainte Anne, one of the leading hospitals in Paris. A vocal advocate for “evidence-based medicine,” Dr Trevidic has been a key investigator in several anti-ageing studies and at the forefront of many others.
In association with colleagues, Dr Trevidic published Anatomy and Botulinum Toxin Injections. The 2010 reference book based on expert observations has since become a best seller. This and subsequent volumes on other aesthetic enhancement topics have all become industry best sellers.
Dr Trevidic is a pioneer in using the world’s first toxin-free treatment for dynamic forehead wrinkles. “I know from experience that there are patients who have hesitations about using botulinum toxin,” he has said. As an alternative that involves no injections, he now recommends that these patients consider focused cold therapies.
“(Focused Cold Therapy) enables me to better serve more of my patients and is a welcome addition to my aesthetic treatment toolbox. Best of all the results are seen immediately which is very exciting.”
Getting under a Patient’s Skin: How to Optimise Eye Rejuvenation
Guests who attended Trevidic’s lecture were treated to a fascinating discussion of surgical blepharoplasty performed in conjunction with fat transfer. This has become a popular treatment with patients, in part, because of advancements in techniques in creating hidden suture lines.
Lower lid rejuvenation involves the use of fat repositioning to bring about fullness to hollows that come with advancing age. The traditional approach focused on how much fat and tissue could be removed. As Trevidic explained, the more modern approach considers how to reposition fat to retain youthful fullness while eliminating eye bags.
Banding Together Against Turkey Neck
Trevidic also spoke to his audience about platysma banding and how to solve it effectively.
The platysma is one of several muscles at the front of the neck and under the chin. When they are toned, these muscles hold the neck and jaw line upward. Over time, however, the muscles sag and separate, leading to a drooping chin, sagging jaw line and loose skin under the chin.
The result is the all-too-common and none-too-welcome condition known as “turkey neck.”
Exercises can only do so much to correct or prevent against this problem. As ageing and lack of skin and muscle invite layers of fat to settle in beneath the muscle sheath, a surgical lift performed by a skilled doctor is indicated, says Trevidic.
“The skin follows the platysma bands so it’s important with a neck lift or any other treatment to the neck that you treat the skin also.”
