Joan Rivers died this year at the age of 81, following complications during surgery. In the course of a career that spanned six decades, Rivers worked as a comedienne, actress, writer, producer, and television host. She was a woman whose indomitable spirit allowed her to keep laughing, even in the face of tragedy and heartbreak.
In her book Bouncing Back (1997), Rivers describes how she developed bulimia nervosa and contemplated taking her own life. Eventually she recovered with counselling and the support of her family, only to lose her husband to depression and suicide.
She tried and notoriously failed to win a late-night talk show audience, but fought back again. Ultimately, she found a perfect niche for herself, serving as the arbiter of taste at red carpet events in Hollywood and on television.

People loved the salty tongued octogenarian for her humour, her wit, and especially for her unabashed love affair with cosmetic enhancement. She freely admitted to having her first procedure at age 31. During the subsequent 50 years of her life, Rivers is reported to have had several facelifts, nose jobs, brow lifts and liposuction, in addition to non-surgical cosmetic treatments such as chemical peels and injections of neurotoxins to erase wrinkles.

“A lot of little things at different times,” she said, explaining that she had always felt unattractive. “The first thing was get rid of the bags under my eyes, I had my nose thinned and my chin done and my neck done twice. I have (cosmetic injections) once every few months by the best doctor in New York.”

“I’m never without a bandage,” she told the Hollywood Reporter with pride. Other famous comments about her nips and tucks include:
“I’ve had so much plastic surgery that when I die, they’ll donate my body to Tupperware.”
“I wish I had a twin so I could know what I’d look like without plastic surgery.”
“I saw what was going on under my chin and I didn’t want to be the one the President has to pardon on Thanksgiving,” referring to the “turkey neck” she had addressed with cosmetic surgery.
“But no more cosmetic injectables for me,” Rivers joked not long before her death. “Betty White has bowels that move more than my face.”
